“Does your work in therapy tend to be more focused on the past or in the present? Why?”
“My work tends to involve working with both the past and the present for most of my clients. Early in everyone’s lives our experiences build blueprints from which we operate to handle our everyday challenges. As we evolve, we see that these blueprints are often skewed and our beliefs are tied to past experiences that interfere with present issues.
In general, it’s helpful to find out how a certain belief or thought patterns was formed, ascertain whether or not these patterns are helpful or hindering our daily lives, and challenge those automatic negative thoughts we oftentimes tell ourselves.
The past informs the present - everyone comes by their blueprints honestly. We just make sure that we’re all operating from a plan that works positively for us and doesn’t hold us back from living our best lives.”
